Ecosystem Science & Restoration Services

WSP Environment & Energy takes an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to ecosystem assessment, restoration and management. The assistance and guidance we provide our clients reflect an ecosystem perspective. Our assessments and recommendations are based on current federal, state and local regulations, and substantiated by thorough scientific analysis. Our professional staff, including nationally recognized experts, has broad-based experience with all aspects of restoration work on many different sites, scales and types of wetland and riparian areas throughout the country. In addition, WSP staff has expertise in botany, ecosystem ecology, forestry, geochemistry, geomorphology, hydrology, landscape architecture, soils, water quality, wetland and river science and wildlife biology. We offer our clients practical and cost-effective solutions to their ecological assessment and restoration needs with an uncompromising commitment to excellence.

Ecological restoration services offered by the WSP team include restoration of waters of the U.S., including wetlands (waters/wetlands); constructed treatment and polishing waters/wetlands; phytoremediation; design, permitting, construction supervision, and compliance monitoring of restoration sites; assessment of waters/wetlands ecosystem functions through the use of Hydrogeomorphic (HGM) functional assessment methodology; ecosystem restoration of highly degraded and environmentally stressed systems (e.g., mine spoils) and areas of special concern; prescriptive measures for invasive species; critical areas planning & review; conservation planning & regulatory assistance; and, propagation of native plant materials. Our capabilities include site and habitat suitability analyses, hydrologic evaluations, hydric soil investigations, conceptual and engineering designs, waters/wetlands ecosystem restoration plans and specifications and on the ground construction supervision, observation and implementation.

To supplement our restoration services, WSP also provides “front-end” ecological evaluation services such as jurisdictional delineations of waters/wetlands; regulatory assistance and permitting; ecological assessments; ecological as well as hydraulic and hydrologic modeling; soil classification, mapping, and suitability analyses; vegetation, wildlife and water quality monitoring; habitat analyses; threatened and endangered species surveys and viability analyses; plant salvage and native plant nursery operations; environmental impact assessments; ecological risk assessments; and natural resource damage assessments (NRDAs). During construction, WSP ensures jobsite compliance with environmental regulations, designs and installs sediment and erosion control measures, monitors water quality and provides storm water pollution prevention plans (SWPPP). In addition, WSP’s existing practices in sediment management, remedial services, and coastal, river and port engineering complement our capabilities in ecosystem restoration.
